What is Shockwave / Radial Pressure Wave Therapy
Shockwave therapy, also known as radial pressure wave (RPW) therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to address bone and soft tissue injuries. This therapy delivers targeted pressure waves to the affected area, which can help to reduce muscle pain and aches and promote the body’s natural healing process.
The technique has roots in the medical field dating back to the 1980s, where it was initially used as lithotripsy to treat kidney stones by breaking them into smaller fragments. Over time, the application of shockwave therapy has expanded significantly and is now increasingly utilized to treat a variety of musculoskeletal disorders without the need for surgery or medication.
How does Shockwave Therapy Work?
Shockwave therapy, utilizes ultrasound technology to treat injuries by delivering high-energy acoustic waves into the affected area. These sound waves penetrate the skin to a depth of about 2 inches, creating rapid back-and-forth movements, or oscillations, within the tissue. This process stimulates blood supply and encourages cell growth in the damaged region. The increased blood flow and cellular activity facilitate the regeneration of healthy tissue and bone, helping to reduce pain and promote healing without the need for surgical intervention or medication. During a session, a gel is applied to the treatment area to ensure smooth movement of the RPW applicator across the skin as gentle pressure is applied.
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
By stimulating blood supply and cell growth in the injured area, RPW therapy helps regenerate healthy tissue and bone. Studies have shown it can safely and significantly reduce tendon pain and improve overall functionality and quality of life. The therapy is effective for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including pain in the hip, shoulder, elbow, and knee, as well as Achilles tendon pain, plantar fasciitis, and myofascial trigger points. Treatments are typically quick, administered in a clinic setting, and often require only a few sessions.
